What is the Jondaryan Woolshed?

Jondaryan Woolshed is the centrepiece of Jondaryan Woolshed Historical Museum and Park that was established in 1975 to present the history of Jondaryan Station and its role in the development of pastoralism on the Darling Downs.

Located in the heart of the Darling Downs, Jondaryan Woolshed is of great historical interest. Easily accessible on a day trip from all parts of south-east Queensland, Jondaryan Woolshed is of particular interest to people fascinated by our rural heritage. (Popup the essential information at a glance.)

The attraction features historic buildings, machinery, equipment and collections, which have been obtained and restored over the past 25 years.

Built in 1859, the Jondaryan Woolshed is the oldest operating woolshed in Queensland.

Woolsheds are used for shearing sheep, and sorting and baling the fleece prior to transportation to market. In Queensland, shearing is undertaken in spring and early summer – September through December. In a climate where it rains in summer, the woolshed is necessary to keep the shearers and sheep dry for efficient processing.

During its heyday the 300-feet-long Jondaryan Woolshed held 52 blade shearing stands and employed numerous other workers processing sheep. These days the shed swings into action for demonstrations and special events. See Events Calendar.

Jondaryan Woolshed is owned and managed by the Jondaryan Shire Council and is supported by Jondaryan Woolshed Association Incorporated, a non-profit community organisation.

Catering

Jondaryan Woolshed is famous for its Billy Tea and Damper, cooked over the coals of an open fire, and often served with Corned Beef.

Billy Tea and Damper is served in an open-air shelter where the damper is cooked over the coals of an open fire. Our damper is made from locally-grown and processed flour with fresh rainwater: this is the real bush bread. The wood-smoke flavour is complemented by lashings of cocky's joy (golden syrup) and freshly-brewed tea.

Country cooking can be enjoyed on the broad verandahs of the genuine Lagoon Creek Homestead by groups who prebook, and during major events. During winter, meals are served for groups inside in front of the open fire.
